The Exit Planning Summit features an assortment of session types to fully immerse advisors in exit planning content from industry experts, partners, and thought leaders.

In this engaging and insightful session, we will address a common question among Certified Exit Planning Advisers (CEPAs): "How do you put it all together?" This phrase, frequently echoed by CEPAs, highlights the need for a cohesive and comprehensive approach to exit planning. Over the course of this 60-minute breakout session, we will delve into the intricacies of the exit planning methodology through a detailed case study of one of our clients. This case study will serve as a practical example to demonstrate how the methodology is implemented from start to finish, encompassing the following key stages: 

  1. Triggering Event Engagement: We will begin by exploring the initial engagement with the client, triggered by a significant event that prompts the need for exit planning. This stage involves understanding the client's motivations, goals, and expectations. 
  2. Assessment: Next, we will discuss the comprehensive assessment process, where we evaluate the client's current business situation, financial health, and readiness for exit. This assessment helps identify the value of the business and any potential gaps that need to be addressed. 
  3. Identify Value: In this stage, we will focus on identifying the key value drivers of the business. We will discuss how to pinpoint areas that can enhance the business's value and make it more attractive to potential buyers or successors. 
  4. Understanding the Gaps: We will then move on to understanding the gaps between the current state of the business and the desired exit outcome. This involves identifying weaknesses, risks, and areas that require improvement. 
  5. Working with the Client Over Time: A critical aspect of exit planning is the ongoing collaboration with the client. We will illustrate how we work with the client over an extended period, implementing strategies and actions to address the identified gaps and enhance the business's value. 
  6. Methodology and Process Management: We will provide insights into how the exit planning methodology and process are managed within the company. This includes the tools, resources, and best practices that ensure a structured and efficient approach. 
  7. Failures and Positive Outcomes: No exit planning process is without its challenges. We will candidly discuss the types of failures that can occur and how they are addressed. Additionally, we will highlight the positive outcomes and success stories that result from effective exit planning. 
  8. Eventual Transition: Finally, we will cover the eventual transition, whether it be an internal succession or an external sale. We will share real-life examples of clients who have successfully navigated the full exit planning process and achieved their desired outcomes.
